Diego Forlan will play his first match as a professional tennis player on Tuesday (12 November) as the men's doubles event of the 2024 Uruguay Open gets underway.

The former Uruguay men's football player is listed as a left-handed player, and is teaming up with Federico Coria of Argentina for the event in Montevideo.

The red clay courts offer a very different challenge for the 45-year-old Forlan, who became a footballing legend in a career spanning 21 years playing at some of the world's biggest clubs, including Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Manchester United. He was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player at the FIFA World Cup in 2010 in South Africa.

Copa America 2011 winner Forlan and partner Coria will face fourth seeds Boris Arias / Federico Zeballos from Bolivia in the Round of 16 to begin their tournament. The match will take place after 13:00 in Montevideo (16:00 GMT), with the full schedule of play to be confirmed on Monday night on the ATP website, here.

The tournament takes place until 17 November.

The Uruguayan and his partner were given wildcards to enter, and much of the broadcast television coverage will focus on how far Forlan can progress in his pro debut, following several ITF amateur events in the over-45 category.
