Two of the biggest nations in men's cricket go head-to-head in a multi-format series to end 2023 and start 2024.

India travel to South Africa to compete in all three main forms of the sport: Twenty20 (T20) Games, One Day Internationals, and five day Test Matches.

The Freedom Series will kick-off in Durban on 10 December for the first of three T20 Internationals. India are ranked world number one, while the Proteas are ranked sixth in the rankings.

India will have high hopes in the shortest format of the game following their recent 4-1 series win over Australia on the subcontinent.

The T20s will be followed by three ODIs. India were the runners-up from the recent Cricket World Cup on home soil, while South Africa lost in the semi-final of that event.

The tour will culminate with two Test matches, with the traditional Boxing Day Test in Centurion before the two sides cross swords again in the longest form of the game in the New Year. The Test matches are a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

South Africa has opted to rest some of their top players – for the T20s and the One-Day Internationals – including regular captain Temba Bavuma and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. Many of the stalwarts will, however, return to boost the Proteas' stocks for first-class cricket. Aiden Markram will wear the captain's armband in Bavuma's absence for the limited-over matches

India will follow a similar recipe with some of their mainstays such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya taking a break from white-ball cricket. The squad will be back to full strength for the two Test matches.
