The Indian women’s pairs duo of Lovely Choubey and Nayanmoni Saikia progressed to the quarter-finals in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK.

Both were part of the women’s fours team that won a historic gold medal at Birmingham 2022 on Tuesday.

The women’s pairs duo beat Niue 23-6 in their final match of section B. They were level on four points with South Africa with the same shots difference of 8. However, the Indians had only conceded 40 points to South Africa’s 44, which helped them sneak through to the last eight.

The men’s fours team of Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, Chandan Kumar Singh and Dinesh Kumar also went through to the quarter-finals after finishing second in section C at Victoria Park in Royal Leamington Spa.

They beat Cook Islands 20-10 before losing 20-11 to England but had done enough in their section to progress.

In the men’s singles, Mridul Borgohain is in prime position to advance to the quarter-finals as he sits second in section D.

He beat the Falkland Islands’ Chris Locke 21-5 and Iain McLean of Scotland 21-19 on Wednesday. The Indian lawn bowler will be guaranteed a quarter-final spot if he wins his final sectional match.

However, the women’s triples team of Pinki, Rupa Tirkey and Tania Choudhary are out of CWG 2022 as they finished third in section C. They beat Niue 28-7 in their last sectional match on Wednesday.

The trio were level on six points with England and New Zealand but had a shots difference of 12 compared to 23 for England and 21 for New Zealand, which meant that those two teams progressed.

Pinki and Rupa Tirkey have already won gold as part of the women’s fours team.
