With legendary Indian boxer Mary Kom sidelined due to injury, world champion Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will look to pack a punch at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK, starting on Thursday.

All the boxing events at CWG 2022 will be held at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre from Friday till August 7. Bouts will be live streamed.

Nikhat Zareen, 26, will compete in the women’s light flyweight division. She created history in May by becoming only the fifth Indian boxer to win a gold medal at the boxing world championships. Nikhat Zareen will be making her Commonwealth Games debut at Birmingham 2022.

The 24-year-old Lovlina Borgohain, meanwhile, became only the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal last year but failed to progress past the second round at the world championships.

Lovlina Borgohain, featuring in her second Commonwealth Games, will play in the women’s light middleweight category. In 2018, she crashed out in the quarter-finals.

Two-time world youth boxing champion Nitu Ghanghas (minimumweight) earned her spot by winning the national trials last month. Asian championships bronze medallist Jaismine Lamboria (lightweight) completes the four-member Indian women’s boxing line-up for the Commonwealth Games.

Olympians Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa will be India’s top bets in the men’s competition.

The former world No. 1 Amit Panghal will also look to shrug off the Tokyo 2020 disappointment. In Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018, Amit Panghal, a world championships silver medallist, lost to Galal Yafai of England in the final of the men’s flyweight division.

Shiva Thapa, former Asian champion and 2015 world championships bronze medallist, will compete in the men’s light welterweight division. This will be Shiva Thapa’s second Commonwealth Games appearance.

Mohammad Hussamuddin, the bronze medallist from 2018, is also in the fray.

However, the two gold medallists from last time, Vikas Krishan and Gaurav Solanki, won’t be defending their titles in Birmingham after losing their national trials.

Indian boxers had finished second in the CWG 2018, securing nine medals, including three gold and as many silver and bronze medals.

Boxing has been a part of the Commonwealth Games since its inception in 1930. England, with 60 golds from a total of 128 medals, are the most successful team at the quadrennial event. India, with eight golds from 37 medals, are 10th on the all-time list.
