India have never won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, and the Birmingham 2022 edition could be their best chance as they seem best prepared for the challenge.

The Indian men’s hockey team is in good form. Bronze medallists at the Tokyo Olympics, India finished third in the FIH Pro League 2021-22 season last month ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign.

At the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre on Sunday, world No. 5 India will start their campaign against the 36th-ranked Ghana.

India won silver medals at the CWG in 2010 and 2014. They lost the final twice to Australia.

The 10-team men’s event has two groups. India are in Group B with England (No. 6), Canada (12), Wales (16) and Ghana. Group A comprises defending champions and world No. 1 Australia with New Zealand (No. 9), South Africa (15th), Pakistan (18) and Scotland (19).

At Gold Coast 2018, under Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne, Indian men finished fourth at the CWG. The team is now under Aussie head coach Graham Reid.

The Indian women's hockey team has a better record at the Commonwealth Games. India women won gold in 2002 and silver in 2006. At Tokyo 2020 last year, they stunned the Olympic fraternity by missing the medal by a whisker to finish fourth.

India women, however, did not fare well in the FIH Women's World Cup in the Netherlands and Spain as they finished ninth.

The team in Birmingham, without the talismanic Rani Rampal, is being coached by former Dutch international Janneke Schopman.

Led by captain Savita Punia, the women’s hockey team is ranked ninth in the world. India women will face England (world No. 5), Canada (15), Wales (24) and Ghana (30) in Group A.

Group B comprises Australia (3), New Zealand (8), Scotland (17), South Africa (20) and Kenya (37).

The India women’s hockey team will start its campaign against Ghana on Friday.
