World championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after seeing off Singapore’s Jason Teh Jia Heng of Singapore in straight games at National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK, on Sunday.

Kidambi Srikanth, who recently dropped down two spots to 13 in the badminton world rankings, beat upcoming youngster Jason Teh Jia Heng 21-15, 21-18 to clinch his second singles medal at the Commonwealth Games. Kidambi Srikanth lost to one of the all-time greats Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the final at Gold Coast in 2018.

Both Kidambi and Jason came into the match a little worn down after playing gruelling three-game semi-finals earlier in the day. However, Kidambi Srikanth, the more experienced of the two badminton players, set the tone in the two games with 4-0 and 3-0 leads, respectively, after early exchanges.

Jason Teh Jia Heng tried mounting a comeback in both the games but the energy-sapped Singaporean shuttler wasn’t able to trouble the former world No. 1 Indian badminton player.

Later, the 19-year-olds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand combined in the women’s doubles to bring home another bronze for India.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who is the daughter of India’s badminton legend Pullela Gopichand, beat Australia’s Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen and Gronya Somerville 21-15, 21-18 to clinch the last spot on the podium.

India have now won three medals in badminton at Birmingham 2022, including a silver in the mixed team event.

Former world champion PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be playing their gold medal matches on Monday.
