China Masters 2024: Jonny be good - Christie rolls into quarter-finals

The sixth-ranked Indonesian knocks out Lu Guangzu in straight sets to reach last eight. Olympic champions Viktor Axelsen and An Seyoung are also through.

Jonatan Christie produced a controlling second-round win over Lu Guangzu at the China Masters 2024 on Thursday (21 November).

The Indonesian shuttler prevailed 21-8, 21-19 to progress to the last eight in 40 minutes in Shenzen. Christie cruised through the first set, leading from start to finish but in the second Lu kept up, never falling behind more than four points.

Yet in the end, world No. 6 Christie showed his class to even his head-to-head against Lu at two wins apiece.

Straight after Christie’s victory, two-time Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen won in two to secure passage to the quarter-finals, getting past Weng Hongyang 21-16, 21-11.

The man Axelsen beat for gold in Paris, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, continued to own Wang Tzu-wei, improving to 7-0 in head-to-heads after a 21-16, 21-17 victory.

Paris 2024 women's singles champion An Seyoung fought back from a game down to defeat Sung Shuo-yun of Chinese Taipei 21-23, 21-12, 21-12.
