Lee Zii Jia will look to avoid another first-round exit at the BWF Hong Kong Open 2023, after suffering his fifth on the badminton World Tour this season at last week’s China Open.
This week’s tournament that takes place from 12-17 September will provide a new chance for Lee, when the Malaysian will face world number 31 Zhao Jun Peng of People’s Republic of China in his first-round match.
The two shuttlers have faced each other twice before with both players winning once. Zhao was victorious in their latest meeting in the round of 16 at last year’s World Championships.
Lee will be hoping to earn crucial qualifying points for Paris 2024 in Hong Kong, China to improve his chances of representing Malaysia in the French capital next year.
Should the world number 14 make it to the second round, he can look forward to an encounter with Olympic champion and world number one Viktor Axelsen or Srikanth Kidambi of India.
