The 27th BWF World Championships in badminton are underway in Tokyo, Japan, with first- and second-round action taking place across the five events of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles on Tuesday, 23 August 2022.

Today, some of the top seeds in the women's singles as well as three doubles events enter the competition, having received byes through the first round.

The top half of the men's singles draw will also be in second-round action today, meaning Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen, Indonesia's Anthony Ginting and Jonatan Christie, and Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien-chen are all scheduled to compete.

Women's singles top seed Yamaguchi Akane of Japan also commences her World Championships, as do the Chinese mixed doubles duos of Wang Yilyu / Huang Dongping and Zheng Siwei / Huang Yaqiong – the Olympic gold and silver medallists respectively.
