Women's defending champion Yamaguchi Akane and Rio 2016 gold medallist Carolina Marin are both safely through to the third round at the 27th BWF World Championships in badminton after both won their respective opening contests in Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday, 23 August 2022.

Olympics.com carried live updates throughout the day from the Japanese capital, which you can re-live below.

All times below are Japan Standard Time (UTC/GMT +9 hours). Most recent updates at the top.

19:56 - Yamaguchi safely through

There will be no upset for Tunjung today.

The Indonesian falters in 34 minutes against the top seed and defending champion.

Yamaguchi wins 21-12, 21-15. An all-Japanese third round clash awaits against Takahashi Sayaka.

19:36 - Yamaguchi holds strong

A couple of blisteringly good rallies in that opening game, but defending champ Yamaguchi Akane – who actually lost her last meeting with her Indonesian opponent Gregoria Tunjung – has taken it, 21-12.

The Indonesian looks slightly hampered by strapping on her leg.

19:20 - Zheng/Huang through

Over on Court 2, our Olympic silver medallists Zheng and Huang have won in straight games, 21-11, 21-12.

19:12 - Yamaguchi about to get underway

On the main court, women's top seed and Japan's home favourite Yamaguchi Akane is up next to get her tournament started.

19:05 - Mixed doubles top seeds lead

The top seeds and Olympic silver medallists Zheng Siwei / Huang Yaqiong look to be on course to make the last 16.

They've taken the opening game 21-11 against Ties van der Lecq / Debora Jille of Netherlands.

18:41 - Wang defeats Christophersen

Also through to the last 16 is Wang Zhiyi, who bounces back from a sluggish first-game start to seal the win.

The Chinese sees off Line Christophersen 21-15, 21-14.

18:21 - He holds off Wang

He Bingjiao is through to the third round in Tokyo.

She defeats Iris Wang 21-13, 21-7.

On Court 2, Wang has taken the first game against Christophersen 21-15.

And on the main court, the Danish 10th seeds are out of the mixed doubles. Mathias Christiansen, clearly struggling with an issue in his right calf and hamstring, and Alexandra Bøje go out to the 2021 bronze medallists Yamashita and Shinoya 21-13, 21-18.

18:06 - He Bingjiao takes first game

Over on Court 3, women's ninth seed He Bingjiao of China has taken the lead in her round-of-32 clash against USA's Iris Wang, 21-13.

That's one of a couple of interesting matches currently underway – on Court 2, Denmark's Line Christophersen leads 11th-seeded Chinese shuttler Wang Zhiyi in the first game.

And on Court 1, mixed doubles 10th seeds Mathias Christiansen / Alexandra Bøje are fighting hard to stay in the competition against Japan's Yamashita Kyohei / Shinoya Naru.

18:02 - What are the top players aiming for in Tokyo?

We go behind the scenes and speak to the biggest names in the sport about their hopes for the week ahead, how it feels to have fans in attendance one year on from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021, and the importance of the event in the current season.

17:30 - Takahashi overcomes slow start to progress

Women's singles 14th seed Takahashi Sayaka of Japan needed three games, but she is through to the last 16.

After dropping the opener to Korea's Kim Ga-eun 9-21, the Japanese rebounded to take the next two 21-16, 21-13.

Her possible opponent? Compatriot and top seed Yamaguchi Akane.

17:20 - Israelis' wonder run comes to an end

They may have made it past the first round, but Misha and Svetlana Zilberman, the Israeli mixed doubles team, have been eliminated in the round of 32.

The mother-and-son team lost to eighth seeds Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia 21-6, 21-5 in straight games.

However, Svetlana – aged 64 – has become the oldest player to win a World Championships match this year. An impressive effort.

17:04 - Jonatan Christie bests Kai Schaefer

The seventh seed from Indonesia eliminated his German opponent 21-4, 21-16. Christie now has a date with Wang Tzu Wei in the next round.

Wang, the 15th seed, earlier beat Lu Guang Zu 21-9, 13-21, 21-14.

16:51 - Marin on her first win in Tokyo

"To get the first victory is always really important to go ahead (in the tournament). I need to get used to the stadium again because my last time was some years ago. We have slow conditions here so I need to keep my focus on my game.

"Next one is going to be He Bing Jiao maybe. But I'm looking forward to playing her on Thursday. I'm happy to get the victory and looking forward to my next round."

16:33 - She's back

The three-time world champion, appearing on this stage for the first time since 2018, marks her return with a cogent 21-16, 21-14 victory over Wen Yu Zhang of Canada.

15:47 - Getting it together

Axelsen to Olympics.com after sealing his place in the last 16:

"Mark, he played really well in the first game and was hard for me to play. The drift was coming in strongly from that side so I had to figure out how to deal with it today.

"I was telling myself to get my s*** together. Again Mark, he played well and I took some bad decisions also due to his good game plan. However I managed to step up and hit a really good smash down the line which gave me a relaxed feeling.

"I’m happy I managed to turn it around especially in the second part of the second game."

15:18 - Axelsen hammers Caljouw

The top seed takes the second game 21-10 against his Dutch opponent, who had a small window in the first frame to make the match competitive.

Then Axelsen slammed it shut. In a hurry.

15:01 - Don't call it a comeback

Viktor Axelsen rattles off five straight points down 16-19 to take the first game vs Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands.

The world's best player has only dropped one game in four prior matches against Caljouw.

14:03 - Ginting "more confident"

"For my match today, I feel a lot more confident. Yesterday I was struggling a bit with the conditions on the court and I was nervous. Today I felt much more better.

"For my next round opponents, (Rasmus) Gemke and Shi Yu Qi, whoever it is I have to prepare well. Tomorrow I have a rest day so I have enough time to prepare."

13:37 - Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in control

The sixth-seeded Indonesian swept past Georges Julien Paul - ranked 104th in the world and from Mauritius - 21-10, 21-16 in less than half an hour to reach the last 16.

12:48 - Ng Tze Yong crashes out

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist is ousted from the tournament by Thailand's Sittikhom Thammasin 21-9, 10-21, 21-19.

11:24 - Hosts in action

Japan won all eight of their matches on Monday. Natsu Saito and Hiroki Midorikawa have kicked things off for the host country on Day 2 against Vimala Heriau/Fabien Delrue of France.

10:52 - Chou Tien Chen into 3rd round

The fourth seed is first through to the men's last 16 following a 21-15, 21-12 win over Jason Anthony Ho-Shue in their first career meeting.

9:46 - First things first

And we have our first winners of the day with Jolly and Pullela going through 21-11, 21-13, making fairly quick work of Low and Siow.

9:23 - The heat is on

It's only close to 9:30 here but outside the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, it is roasting.

Really appreciating badminton is an indoor sport.

8:57 - Good morning

And off we go with Day 2!

Choi Sol Gyu/Shin Seung Chan from the Republic of Korea and the German pair of Jones Ralfy Jansen/Linda Efler on the first court to start things off, and Malaysia's Low Yeen Yuan/Valeree Siow and Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand Pullela on court No. 2.

Welcome to day two of our live coverage of the 2022 BWF World Championships.

It was a thrilling first day to the event in Tokyo. Could we be in for more shocks on day two?
