After an underpar season in the Indian Super League (ISL) that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time, India’s Bengaluru FC are eager to turn the tide in the 2021 AFC Cup.

Bengaluru FC will begin their continental commitment with a qualifier match against the Nepal Army football team, also called Tribhuvan Army, on Wednesday.

If Bengaluru FC win the match, they will play the winner of the Abahani Limited Dhaka (Bangladesh) vs Club Eagles (Maldives) tie. The winner of that clash will earn a spot in Group D of 2021 AFC Cup.

Bengaluru FC have named a strong team for the one-off match with their captain Sunil Chhetri returning to the squad following his bout with COVID-19.

The match will also be German Marco Pezzaiuoli’s first as head coach of the Bengaluru FC.

“I am very hungry for the first game. We have had very good preparation,” Pezzaiuoli said at the pre-match press briefing. “It's an important game for us since last year we went out of the competition at this stage. We want to be the group stage.

“We have a tough game at hand… But we are thinking about ourselves. I think we are strong enough to beat them and make the next round.”

The last time Bengaluru FC competed in the AFC Cup they were knocked-out early by Bhutan’s Paro FC.

“We have watched Bengaluru FC in the ISL,” Nepal Army head coach Nabin Neupane said. “Yes, they are a top team... I think we can give a good fight. It will be a tough match.”
