Not long after their stint at the FIBA World Cup 2023, the Gilas Pilipinas are returning to action for the men’s basketball tournament at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
The event running from 26 September to 6 October is set to be hosted across two venues in Hangzhou and will feature 16 teams, which have been divided for the preliminary round into four groups of four.
Gilas will start the tournament in Group C along with Jordan, Bahrain and Thailand and they will be the favourite to emerge out of the group in first place with a Rondae Hollis-Jefferson-led Jordan likely to be their greatest challenge.
Having missed out on the chance to directly qualify for Paris 2024 at the global showpiece co-hosted in Manila, the Philippines will be approaching Hangzhou with redemption in their sights. And with the Asiad's current reigning champions China also finishing the FIBA World Cup with a 1-4 record, including a loss to the Gilas, hopes are high that the team can return home with a medal for the first time since 1998.
