The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani and the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge became the latest winners of Major League Baseball’s Most Valuable Player Awards on Thursday (21 November).
Both Ohtani and Judge won their crowns by unanimous vote of all 30 voters in the National League and American League respectively.
Ohtani received his third MVP after winning it in 2021 and 2023 with the Los Angeles Angels, all three of them unanimously. He remains the only player to have won more than one MVP Award by a unanimous vote. In his first year with the Dodgers in 2024, he became the first player in the history of the game to hit 50 or more home runs (54) and steal 50 bases (59) in the same season.
His win also saw him become just the second player to win the MVP in both leagues after Frank Robinson achieved the feat (1961, 1966) and the first full-time designated hitter to win MVP.
Judge - who faced Ohtani and the Dodgers in the World Series in a losing cause - was named MVP in his league for the second time in three years. He batted .322 with 58 homers, 144 RBIs, 122 runs scored and an OPS of 1.159.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America has voted for the MVP in each league since 1931. Ballots are submitted before the postseason and based on a weighted points system.
