The much-awaited Australian Open 2024 gets underway at Melbourne Park on Sunday.
The Australian Open will be the first of the four tennis Grand Slams of the year and will conclude with the men’s singles final on January 28. Live streaming and telecast of the AO 2024 will be available in India.
Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic will look for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam win and an unprecedented 11th Australian Open title. Djokovic has won four of the last five Australian Open trophies. He did not play in the 2022 edition due to his COVID-19 vaccination status.
Rafael Nadal, who clinched the title Down Under in 2022, pulled out of the Grand Slam a week before the start of the tournament due to a hip injury.
The 36-year-old Djokovic, world No. 1, will face stiff challenges from second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev and fourth-ranked Jannik Sinner. All three have beaten Djokovic in high-stakes matches in the last three years.
Alcaraz beat Djokovic in the Wimbledon 2023 final while Sinner got the better of Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup last year. Medvedev, who lost the 2022 final against Nadal, beat Djokovic in the 2021 US Open final.
The women’s singles event also has a star-studded cast with defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in fray. Swiatek does not have the best of the records Down Under but will look to change that.
World No. 3 Elena Rybakina finished runner-up last year and will be looking to go the distance this time. Coco Gauff, fresh from her win at the US Open and Naomi Osaka, who made a comeback after 15 months at the Brisbane International earlier this month, will also be contenders.
Indian tennis players at Australian Open 2024
Sumit Nagal made the cut for the main draw of the men’s singles event from the qualifying rounds. This will be Nagal’s fourth appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam and second at the Australian Open. Indian women’s singles tennis player Ankita Raina crashed out in the second qualifying round.
US Open 2023 finalists Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden will look for the crown in the men’s doubles. The Indian Grand Slam winner, along with Ebden, had a stellar 2023 season, which included the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 title.
Bopanna also made the Australian Open mixed doubles final with Sania Mirza last year.
