Winning a Grand Slam is considered one of the biggest feats in tennis.
The four Grand Slams - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open - hold unparalleled significance with each tournament possessing different traditions and aura.
So far, Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati, are the only four Indian tennis players to have won a Grand Slam in their careers. The quartet accumulated a collective tally of 33 Grand Slam titles. All these victories have been secured in the Open Era and exclusively in doubles competitions.
With 18 Grand Slam titles, Leander Paes is India’s most successful tennis player and is regarded as one of the best doubles players of all time. Mahesh Bhupati was the first Indian to win a Grand Slam while Sania Mirza is the only Indian woman to win a Grand Slam. India’s last Grand Slam came through Rohan Bopanna at the Australian Open 2024.
Here’s a look at India’s Grand Slam winners
Leander Paes - 18 Grand Slam wins
Paes won the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta to become India’s first, and so far, the only medallist in tennis at the Summer Games. However, he earned his place in the Tennis Hall of Fame due to his achievements as a doubles player.
Paes has eight men’s doubles Grand Slam titles and 10 in mixed doubles. He is one of only three men in tennis history to capture a career Grand Slam in both doubles categories. He shares the record for the most mixed doubles Grand Slam titles in the Open Era with his former partner Martina Navratilova.
In men’s doubles, Paes has won three Grand Slams each at the US Open and French Open. He won the Wimbledon and the Australian Open once each.
In mixed doubles, Leander Paes boasts an impressive collection, winning the Wimbledon four times, the Australian Open thrice, the US Open twice and the French Open once.
The year 1999 particularly proved to be a turning point in his career. Paes, along with his partner Mahesh Bhupathi, reached the final in all four Grand Slams. They won the French Open, making them the first Indian team to win a Grand Slam.
Paes also won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title in 1999 with her American partner Lisa Raymond. Paes was ranked the No. 1 doubles tennis player in the world in 1999.

Mahesh Bhupathi - 12 Grand Slam wins
Bhupathi is the first Indian tennis player to win a Grand Slam. He bagged the 1997 French Open mixed doubles title with Japan’s Rika Hiraki. It was the first time Mahesh Bhupathi and Hiraki had teamed up. While Bhupati was searching for a partner for mixed doubles on the eve of the competition, he ran into Rika, whose original partner had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts.
The Indo-Japanese duo decided to team up and defeated favourites Cyril Suk-Helena Sukova in the semi-finals and the top-seeds Lisa Raymond and Patrick Galbraith in the final.
It was just the beginning of Mahesh Bhupathi’s decorated career as he won a total of 12 Grand Slam titles. His eight mixed doubles titles included two each of the four Majors. He won four men’s doubles titles, three of which came alongside Paes.

Sania Mirza - six Grand Slam wins
Sania is the only Indian woman to have ever won a Grand Slam tennis title.
She was India’s leading singles tennis player but injuries forced Sania Mirza to focus only on doubles.
From 2009 to 2016, Sania won six Grand Slam doubles titles – three each in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles. In 2015, she even became the world No. 1 in the women’s doubles ranking.
Sania’s first Grand Slam title came at the 2009 Australian Open when she partnered Mahesh Bhupathi to win the mixed doubles crown. Her second major title also came in the mixed doubles with Bhupathi at the 2012 French Open before the 2014 US Open title win alongside Bruno Soares of Brazil.
Sania’s first women's doubles Grand Slam title came at 2015 Wimbledon alongside her Swiss partner Martina Hingis. Thus, she became the first Indian to win a women's doubles Major. The pair’s terrific form continued into the next Grand Slam in 2015 where the duo clinched the US Open title. Sania won her last Grand Slam title at the 2016 Australian Open, also alongside Hingis.

Along with his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, Bopanna won the 2024 Australian Open men's doubles event to become the oldest man (at 43 years and nine months) to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era.
Bopanna made the mixed doubles finals of the 2018 and 2023 Australian Opens with Hungary’s Timea Babos and Sania Mirza, respectively. Bopanna, along with Australian Matthew Ebden, made the 2023 US Open final. His first appearance in a Grand Slam final came at the 2010 US Open with Aisam-Ul-Haq of Pakistan.
