Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will aim to rediscover her form while fellow Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen will be out to extend his purple patch at the Australian Open 2023 BWF Super 500 tournament, scheduled from August 1 to 6.
The Australian Open 2023 will be live streamed in India. The badminton matches will be played at the State Sports Centre in Sydney.
PV Sindhu, seeded fifth in Australia, has struggled for form this year. She has lost in the first round of her last two competitions - the Japan Open and the Korea Open. Overall, PV Sindhu has made first round exits in seven of the 13 BWF World Tour 2023 tournaments she has played this year.
The 28-year-old Sindhu, 17th in the world badminton rankings, is yet to win a title this season. Her best run came in the Madrid Spain Masters, where Sindhu reached the final before losing to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia.
Former world champion PV Sindhu, who recently appointed former Malaysian shuttler Muhammad Hafiz Hashim as her new coach, will open her campaign against compatriot Ashmita Chaliha.
Malvika Bansod and Tasnim Mir will also start in the women’s singles main draw.
In the men’s singles, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen will play. The 21-year-old Sen has made the top four in his last three tournaments. The run includes the Canada Open title win earlier in July and semi-final appearances at the Japan and US Open.
World No. 9 HS Prannoy, seeded sixth in the tournament, will face world No. 15 Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong in the round of 32. Kidambi Srikanth, who lost to HS Prannoy in the Japan Open, is also in the fray and will take on Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in his opening match. Priyanshu Rajawat will also start in the main draw.
India will have no direct entry in the men’s doubles. The pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who won the Korea Open recently, have skipped the tournament.
The duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will be the only Indian women’s doubles team in the main draw.
Results at the Australian Open will count towards players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The qualification window for badminton started on May 1 this year.
