India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, who won the Australian Open title together at the start of the year, will look to close out their season with a solid show at the ATP Finals 2024 in Turin, Italy starting from Sunday.
Live streaming and telecast of the ATP Finals 2024 will be available in India.
The season-ending men’s tennis championship consists of two events - one for singles and one for doubles. The ATP Finals, to be played at the Inalpi Arena, will see the year’s top eight singles players and doubles teams.
The qualification for the ATP Finals is based on the points won in the ATP events in the respective calendar year.
Both singles and doubles tournaments will begin with a group stage, followed by knockout rounds. The top two players or teams from each group of four will advance to the semi-finals.
Ebden, who won the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics along with John Peers, and Rohan Bopanna are seeded sixth and pitted in the Bob Bryan Group.
The Indian-Australian duo will open its campaign against Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on Monday. Kevin Krawietz-Tim Puetz and Marcelo Arevalo-Mate Pavic are the other two teams in the Bob Bryan Group.
Wesley Koolhof-Nikola Mektic, Harri Heliovaara-Henry Patten, Marcel Granollers-Horacio Zeballos and Max Purcell-Jordan Thompson are in the Mike Bryan Group.
The doubles groups are named after American doubles players Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, two of the most successful tennis players in history who also won the men's doubles gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
This will be Bopanna’s fifth appearance at the ATP Finals after 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2023. The Indian tennis player made the finals in 2012 and 2015, first with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and then with Romania’s Florin Mergea. He lost on both occasions.
Bopana and Ebden reached the semi-finals last year. No Indian has won the ATP Finals title to date.
Last year’s winners Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury will not be defending their doubles title in Turin this year after they parted ways in September. Last year’s singles champion Novak Djokovic, the most successful singles player at the ATP Finals, is also not competing due to injury.
In Djokovic’s absence, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, second in the tennis rankings, and Spain’s world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz will be among top contenders.
