Raiza Dhillon and Gurjoat Singh Khangura won the bronze medal in the mixed skeet team event as India signed off the Asian Shotgun Championships 2024 in Kuwait City with one gold, three silvers and four bronze medals on Sunday.
The Indian shooting pair defeated Kuwait’s Abdullah Al-Rashidi and Eman Al-Shamaa 41-39 in the bronze medal match. The People’s Republic of China defeated Kazakhstan 45-43 for the gold medal while the second bronze medal was won by Bahrain, who defeated Qatar 39-38.
In the qualification round, India finished seventh with a score of 138 to make the final. Though only the top six make the medal matches, Kazakhstan had two teams in the top six and only one team from the country progressed to the medal round.
The Asian Shotgun Championships were held from January 14 to 21. The event also doubled as the qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics for Indian shooters in trap and skeet events.
Indian shooters won a total of eight medals in Kuwait and obtained two Olympic quotas for the country.
Anantjeet Singh Naruka, an Asian Games silver medallist, and Raiza Dhillon obtained Paris 2024 Olympic quotas for India with silver medals in the men’s and women’s skeet events, respectively. These were India’s first quotas in the men’s and women’s skeet events for the Paris Olympics, taking India’s tally of Olympic quotas in shooting for the upcoming Olympics to 19.
Maheshwari Chauhan won the bronze medal in women’s skeet while Lakshay Sheoran claimed the bronze medal in men’s trap. However, they were not able to secure Olympic quotas for India.
The women’s skeet team won India’s only gold medal at the Asian Shotgun Championships 2024. The Asian Championships for rifle and pistol shooters were held in Jakarta earlier this month. India won 26 medals and four Olympic quotas from that event.
