The Asian Olympic Qualifier Shotgun 2024 shooting event is scheduled to start in Kuwait City on Sunday.

The Paris 2024 Olympic qualifying event, which also doubles up as the Asian Shotgun Championships 2024, will conclude on January 22. India will field 15 shooters at the meet.

In Kuwait, two Paris 2024 quotas will be on offer for each of the four shotgun Olympic shooting disciplines - men’s trap and skeet and women’s trap and skeet.

The top two shooters in each of these categories, provided they are eligible and their respective countries haven’t secured their full allocation for the event, will secure quotas for their respective countries.

National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games and athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

India, so far, have won 17 Paris 2024 quotas in shooting but only two of them have come from shotgun shooters. Bhowneesh Mendiratta secured a men’s trap quota for India at the 2022 world championships while Rajeshwari Kumari obtained one in women’s trap from the 2023 worlds.

India can still win six more quotas - two each in the men’s and women’s skeet and one each in the men’s and women’s trap - before the qualification window concludes on June 9.

Indian shotgun shooters, including the likes of Zoravar Singh Sandhu, Manisha Keer, Preeti Rajak, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Gurjoat Singh Khangura and Ganemat Sekhon, will have the opportunity to obtain four quotas from the Kuwait meet as rules state that a country can secure only one quota place in an event in any designated ISSF championship.

Naruka is an individual medallist from last year’s Asian Games, having clinched the men’s skeet silver medal. Sandhu was part of the gold medal-winning men’s trap team in Hangzhou while Keer and Rajak featured in the women’s team which bagged silver.
