A total of 13 Indian athletes - six women and seven men - competed at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024 in Tehran, Iran, from February 17 to 19.
India finished the athletics meet with four medals - three gold and one silver. Men's shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor, women's hurdler Jyothi Yarraji and Harmilan Bains accounted for the top podium finishes while Ankita bagged the solitary silver in the women's 3000m race.
Gulveer Singh also won the gold medal in the men's 3000m race initially but was later stripped of his medal as he was disqualified for lane infringement.
The Indian contingent in Tehran also included Asian Games medallist Ajay Kumar Saroj and Shaili Singh, a silver medallist at the 2021 U20 World Athletics Championships in the women’s long jump.
India’s 25-member contingent at the last edition in Astana returned with eight medals - one gold, six silvers and one bronze. Tajinderpal was the only gold medallist. India's most successful outing at the Asian Asian Indoor Athletics Championships came at the 2008 edition in Doha, where they won five gold medals and topped the standings.
Indian athletes also broke two national records in Tehran. While Jyothi Yarraji's timing of 8.12s in the women's 60m hurdles saw her better her own silver medal-winning mark from last season by 0.1 seconds, Tajindepal's winning throw of 19.72m shattered the previous indoor shot put national record of 19.60m set by Vikas Gowda back in 2005.
