Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Manu Bhaker and former world champion Rudrankksh Patil will lead a strong 33-member Indian shooting contingent at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.

The shooting events at the 19th edition of the Asian Games will be held from September 24 to October 1. A total of 33 medal events will take place across rifle, pistol and shotgun categories at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre.

Manu Bhaker will be competing in the 25m sports pistol shooting event. She topped the qualification round with a new Asian Games record in the same category at Jakarta 2018 but finished sixth in the final.

Rudrankksh Patil, who won India’s first world championships gold medal in the 10m air rifle since Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra in 2006, is also in the fray.

Last year, Patil secured a Paris 2024 Olympics quota place for India by winning gold at the world championships. On his Asian Games debut, the 19-year-old will be accompanied by Olympians Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh Panwar in the men’s 10m air rifle event.

Six of seven Indian shooters who obtained Paris 2024 Olympic quotas for their country are in action at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou.

Rudrankksh Patil, Swapnil Kusale, Akhil Sheoran, Mehuli Ghosh, Sift Kaur Samra will represent India in rifle events. Rajeshwari Kumari, who obtained an Olympic quota for India in women's trap last month, will spearhead India’s challenge in the shotgun event. Bhowneesh Mendiratta could not find a place in the Indian men’s trap team.

Interestingly, none of the nine Indian medallists from the previous edition, including gold medallists Saurabh Chaudhary and Rahi Sarnobat, made the cut for the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Shooting has been a part of the Asian Games programme since 1954. India have won a total of nine golds from the 58 shooting medals.
