Pandelela Rinong Pamg and Nur Dhabitah Sabri of Malaysia won bronze in the women's synchronised 10m platform with a score of 266.94 as the diving competition got under way at the Asian Games 2023 on Saturday (30 September).
The sport's first gold medal of the Games in Hangzhou went to none other than the Chinese duo of Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi (375.30), who put 85 points on the runners-up from Japan, Arai Matsuri/Itahashi Minami (290.04).
Pamg, back at the Games for the first time in nine years, and Sabri delivered on their fifth and final dive of the evening that lifted them from fourth place on to the podium.
"I am grateful because I couldn't compete in Palembang because of injury," the four-time Olympian said. “So tonight I am thankful and appreciate Dhabitah as we both managed to complete everything safely.
“Even though it didn't all go according to plan we are satisfied and will do our best for the next events.”
Sabri revealed she fought through a lingering wrist injury that she had suffered in the run-up to these Games.
"Given how I had to deal with injuries for the past month in training camp, I'm so elated and happy - amid the ongoing pain," she said.
"I'm very proud to have won this bronze medal and I'm equally proud of Pandelela Rinong for giving her very best."
Pamg will next compete on Tuesday in the 10m platform while Sabri is penciled in for three more events - the 3m synchro springboard, 1m springboard and the 3m springboard.
