Hockey at the Asian Games 2023 features separate tournaments for both men and women. All hockey matches at the 19th Asian Games, scheduled in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, will be played at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium.
The men’s hockey tournament at the Asian Games 2023 starts on September 24. The bronze and gold medal matches will be played on October 6.
The 12-team men’s hockey competition at the 2023 Asian Games will be held in two phases - the preliminary round or group stage and the final round. For the preliminary round, the teams have been divided into two pools of six teams each.
India are in Pool A with reigning Asian Games champions Japan and arch-rivals Pakistan.
Asian Games 2023 men’s hockey teams and groups
Teams in both pools will face each other in a single-headed round-robin format with the top two from each pool making the semi-finals. The remaining teams play classification matches.
The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan hockey match at the Asian Games 2023 is scheduled for September 30. The Indian men’s hockey team are two-time Asian Games champions while Pakistan have won the gold medal at the continental showpiece a record eight times.
The Hangzhou 2023 women’s hockey tournament, meanwhile, is scheduled from September 25 to October. The format is similar to the men’s tournament and starts with the preliminary round, where the 10 competing teams are divided into two pools.
The Indian women's hockey team, who won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, is placed in Pool A.
