Dipika Pallikal, the reigning doubles world champion in women’s and mixed events, will lead the eight-member Indian squash team at the Asian Games 2023 to be held in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.
The squash events are scheduled from September 26 to October 5 and will be held at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Squash Court. Medals will be on offer in five events - men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s teams and mixed doubles. The mixed doubles event is making its Asian Games debut in Hangzhou.
Squash at the Asian Games 2023 will start with team events on September 26. The singles and mixed doubles start on October 1 and will conclude on October 5. Matches can be seen live in India.
Pallikal won individual bronze at Jakarta 2018 but has not featured in competitive singles since 2019. However, she will feature in the mixed doubles at Hangzhou 2023.
The 31-year-old Dipika Pallikal will team up with Harinderpal Singh Sandhu in mixed doubles. The duo won the Asian mixed doubles squash championship at the same venue in June and are expected to be the top seeds at the Asian Games.
Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal, who also won individual bronze medals last time, are expected to carry the Indian challenge in the women’s and men’s singles, respectively.
The Indian women’s squash team also features a 15-year-old Anahat Singh, an under-15 Asian champion in 2022 and the under-17 Asian champion in 2023.
The Indian men’s squash team includes Saurav Ghosal, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Harinderpal Singh Sandhu. The Indian trio was part of the four-member team that bagged India’s only Asian Games gold in squash at Incheon 2014. The 25-year-old Abhay Singh is the other member in India’s four-member men’s team at Hangzhou.
At the last edition of the Asian Games in 2018, Indian squash players returned with one silver and four bronze.
Squash made its Asian Games debut at Bangkok 1998. Since then, India have one gold, three silver and nine bronze medals for a total of 13.
