Asian Games 2023 squash: Joshna Chinappa out, Saurav Ghosal makes quarter-finals

India’s Tanvi Khanna progressed to the last eight in women’s singles but Mahesh Mangaonkar lost his men’s singles round of 16 match.

India’s Joshna Chinappa bowed out from the women’s singles while Saurav Ghosal made the men’s quarter-finals at Asian Games 2023 squash events in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, on Monday.

Joshna Chinappa exited the women’s singles squash event after losing 1-3 (4-11, 12-10, 9-11, 8-11) to Mingyeong Heo of the Republic of Korea.

The 37-year-old Joshna Chinappa won a singles bronze medal at the last edition of the Asian Games, Jakarta 2018. The veteran Indian squash player also bagged a women’s team bronze at Hangzhou 2023.

Tanvi Khanna, the other Indian in the women’s singles event, meanwhile, sailed into the quarter-finals with a 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-2) win over Thailand’s Arichaya Chujit. Tanvi will be up against Japan’s Satomi Watanabe in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Saurav Ghosal, meanwhile, opened his men’s singles campaign with a comfortable 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-6) win over Kuwait’s Ammar Al Tamimi to advance to the quarter-finals..

In the last eight, the 37-year-old Saurav Ghosal will face Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue, who beat India’s Mahesh Mangaonkar 3-0 (11-6, 11-2, 11-6) in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.

In the mixed doubles event, the Indian duo of Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh registered their third consecutive win in Pool D. The Indian pair beat Thailand's Anantana Prasertratanakul and Arkaradet Arkarahirunya 2-0 (11-5, 11-6).

Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu will be in action in their third mixed doubles Pool A match on Tuesday.
