The Indian women’s rugby sevens team finished seventh at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.
Rugby sevens at the Asian Games 2023 was held at the Hangzhou Normal University Cangqian Athletics Field from September 24 to 26.
Hangzhou 2023 marked the Indian women’s rugby sevens team’s second appearance at the Asian Games following their debut at Guangzhou 2010, where the team also finished seventh.
While men’s rugby sevens was first introduced in the 1998 edition, the women’s competitions at the continental meet began 12 years later at the Asian Games in 2010. Kazakhstan beat hosts China to win the maiden gold medal. China won the gold in 2014 while Japan clinched the top podium at Jakarta 2018.
Ranked seventh in Asia, the Indian women’s rugby sevens team, coached by former South African player Ludwiche Van Deventer, started in Pool F in the preliminary round alongside Hong Kong China, Singapore and 2018 champions Japan.
