Indian athletes will compete for medals across 39 different sports at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.
Hangzhou 2023 will be held officially from September 23 to October 8 but certain events, including football, volleyball, table tennis and cricket, commence before the official start date. Broadcast of the events can be seen live on TV and mobile apps via live streaming.
Originally scheduled to take place in September 2022, the 19th edition of the quadrennial event was postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Asian Games 2023 will stage 481 events across 40 sports (61 disciplines), with 45 countries sending delegations.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Asian Games, world and Olympic champion in the men’s javelin throw, headlines India’s 655-member Asian Games squad. The 68-member squad for athletics - 35 men and 33 women - is India’s largest contingent for any sport in Hangzhou.
The Indian men’s and women’s cricket team, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Harmanpreet Kaur, respectively, will be making their Asian Games debut in Hangzhou.
Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, boxer Lovlina Borgohain and wrestler Bajrang Punia, all Olympic medallists, will also be competing in Hangzhou.
HS Prannoy will be competing in the badminton singles alongside Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu. India are still waiting for a maiden Asian Games gold medal in badminton.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the Asian record holder in shot put, will defend his Asian Games title in Hangzhou. Swapna Barman and Jinson Johnson, the defending champions in the heptathlon and men’s 1500m, respectively, will also be in action.
The 19th Asian Games also offers 74 Paris 2024 Olympic quotas - six in archery, 10 in artistic swimming, 34 in boxing, two in breaking, two in hockey, 10 in modern pentathlon, six in sailing, two in tennis and two in water polo.
