Asian Games 2023 diving: India draw blank in Hangzhou

Two Indian divers, Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi and London Singh Hemam, competed in four events at Hangzhou 2023. Neither won a medal.

India’s campaign in diving at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, wrapped up on Wednesday with Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi finishing 11th in the men’s 10m platform finals.

Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi scored 234.55 points to finish 12th in the preliminary round to make the final. In the medal round, the Indian diver managed 268.00 to finish 11th overall.

A total of two Indian divers, Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi and London Singh Hemam, competed across four different medal events 

Both competed in the men's 3m springboard and men's synchronised 3m springboard events. Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi was part of the individual men’s 10m platform competition while London Singh Hemam was India’s sole representative in men’s 1m springboard.

India’s diving campaign at the Asian Games 2023 began with the men's synchronised 3m springboard team event on September 30. Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi and London Singh Hemam combined for a score of 279.87 to finish 6th in a six-team field.

China, the Republic of Korea and Malaysia clinched the podium spots in the men's synchronised 3m springboard event.

In the individual men’s 3m springboard event held on October 3, neither Indian divers managed to progress beyond the preliminary round. Siddharth Bajrang Pardeshi came in 16th with 236.35 points while London Singh Hemam followed at 17th with 207.00. Only the top 12 made the final cut.

London Singh Hemam also competed in the men’s 1m springboard finals on October 3, where he tallied 207.80 to finish 12th.

Diving has been part of the Asian Games since the inaugural edition in 1951. India have only ever won five medals - two golds, one silver and two bronze - in the sport at the continental meet.

Four of the five medals came at New Delhi 1951 with KP Thakkar winning gold medals in men’s 3m springboard and 10m platform. Ashu Dutt finished with silver in the men’s 3m springboard while TT Dand bagged a bronze in the 10m platform.

KP Thakkar went back to win a bronze in the 1-m platform at Manila 1954. It remains India’s last diving medal at the Asian Games.
