The Indian canoeing team finished with one medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.
Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam accounted for the solitary medal with a bronze in the men’s canoe double 1000m sprint event.
The Fuyang Water Sports Centre hosted canoeing events at the Asian Games 2023. The sprint events were conducted from September 30 to October 3 while the slalom races took place between October 5 and October 7.
India’s contingent for the canoe events at the 19th Asian Games featured 17 athletes - four in slalom and 13 in sprint.
Indian canoers competed in seven medal events at Hangzhou 2023. Meanwhile, the Indian kayakers raced in five medal competitions.
Sprint races are held on flatwater courses with distances ranging between 200m and 1000m. In slalom races, athletes compete on whitewater or rapid courses, up to 300m in length and need to pass 16 to 25 designated gates in a given order.
Canoeing made its Asian Games debut in 1990. Prior to Hangzhou 2023, Indian canoeing athletes had won one medal at the continental meet, courtesy of Johnny Rommel and Siji Kumar Sadanandan’s bronze in the men’s C2 1000m event at Hiroshima 1994.
