A 16-member Indian archery team, including Olympian Atanu Das and world champions Aditi Gopichand Swami and Ojas Pravin Deotale, will be in action at the Asian Games 2023, which is scheduled in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.
Archery events at the 2023 Asian Games are scheduled to run from October 1 to 7 at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre. All match-ups can be seen live in India.
Competitions in both the recurve and non-Olympic compound disciplines will feature in the archery programme at the Asian Games 2023. Each category will have medal events in the men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, women’s team and mixed team sections.
While recurve archer Atanu Das, a former Olympian, and compound archer Abhishek Verma, the 2014 Incheon Games men’s compound silver medallists, are experienced campaigners, the other archers in the Indian squad are relatively young.
However, there’s ample potential in the squad to support India’s quest for archery medals in Hangzhou. The compound squad, in particular, has been in terrific form of late.
Aditi Gopichand Swami, just 17, recently became the youngest archery world champion at the Berlin World Championships while Pravin Ojas Deotale became the first Indian man to win an individual world championship gold medal at the same meet in Germany.
Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the women’s individual compound bronze medallist from the 2023 Berlin Archery World Championships, will also be a strong medal contender at Hangzhou.
Indian archers won only two silver medals, one in the men’s compound team and the other in the women’s compound team competition, at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and the current lot will look to better that tally at Hangzhou 2023.
