Led by world champions Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain, a 13-member Indian boxing contingent will look to pack a punch at the Asian Games 2023, to be held in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.
The boxing events at the Asian Games are scheduled to start on September 24 at the Hangzhou Gymnasium and will conclude on October 5. Medals will be on offer across all 13 (seven men's and six women's) Olympic weight divisions.
Besides the medals, boxers will also have the opportunity to obtain quotas for the upcoming Olympics. Boxing at the Asian Games 2023 will serve as Paris 2024 qualifiers. All bouts will be live streamed and can be seen in India.
In the men’s boxing events, the gold and silver medallists in each of the seven weight divisions will be issued a quota by the IOC. For women, four quotas will be on offer in each of the 50kg, 54kg, 57kg and 60kg divisions. The 66kg and 75kg women's divisions will have two quotas up for grabs. Only one boxer per country will be eligible to secure a quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics per weight category.
The IOC will declare the quotas won by the respective national Olympic committees (NOC) from Asia on October 11.
Nikhat Zareen, 27, will compete in the women's 50kg. She created history in March by becoming the only Indian boxer besides Mary Kom to win multiple gold medals at the world boxing championships. Nikhat also won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games last year and will be making her Asian Games debut.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain will be another high-profile Indian boxer making an Asian Games debut. The 25-year-old Lovlina is the reigning world champion in the middleweight category (75kg) and will participate in the same weight class.
Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora, who won gold medals in the women's 48kg and women's 81kg at the world championships in New Delhi earlier this year, couldn’t make the cut for the Indian squad for the Hangzhou Games.
In the men’s divisions, former Asian champion and Olympian Shiva Thapa will lead the Indian squad in Amit Panghal’s absence. Panghal won India’s only gold medal in boxing at the 2018 edition of the Asian Games but did not make the cut for Hangzhou 2023.
World championships bronze medallists Deepak Bhoria and Nishant Dev are in the Indian squad in the men’s 51kg and men’s 71kg, respectively. Mohammad Hussamuddin, also a world championships bronze medallist, is out due to injury.
Indian boxers secured one gold and a bronze at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.
Boxing has been a part of the Asian Games programme since 1954. India have won 57 medals, including nine gold, at the continental meet.
