Boxers at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou will be slugging it out not only for gold but a quota at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
In men’s and women’s events combined, 34 places for Paris next summer will be contested at Hangzhou Gymnasium from 24 September to October 5.
In the men’s, the gold and silver medallists in each of the seven weight divisions will be issued a quota. In the women’s, four quota will be on offer for the categories other than the 66kg and 75kg, from which there will be two like the men’s.
India will be one country harbouring big Olympic hopes at these Asian Games.
Among their men, two-time Olympian Shiva Thapa and world bronze medallists Nishant Dev and Deepak Bhoria are out to secure passage to Paris. From their female camp, world champions Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain and Asian champion Parveen Hooda are looking to do the same.
Kazakhstan, led by Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist/flagbearer Kamshybek Kunkabayev (men’s +91kg) and this year’s world champion Nurbek Oralbay (men’s 80kg), are sending six world title-holders.
Tokyo silver medallists Carlo Paalam (men’s 52kg) and Nesthy Patecio (women’s 57kg) will be hoping to do the Philippines proud while bronze medallist Eumir Marcial (men’s 75kg) will aim to follow suit.
Uzbekistan are set to field a couple of Olympic gold medallists in Bakhodir Jalolov (men’s +91kg) and Hasanboy Dusmatov (men’s 49kg), who is also the reigning world champion as is Abdumalik Khalokov in the men’s 57kg.
Boxing joined the Asian Games program in 1954.The Hangzhou Asian Games was originally due to take place in 2022 but was postponed by one year because of the global pandemic.
