The Indian men’s hockey team will take on the People’s Republic of China in its Asian Champions Trophy 2023 opener at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.
All matches of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament will be available on live streaming in India.
Six top Asian hockey teams - India, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan and China - will vie for title at the seventh edition of the continental meet.
World No. 4 India are the highest-ranked team in the tournament. China, at No. 25, are the lowest-ranked among the six.
After China, India will face world No. 19 Japan the next day before playing back-to-back matches against world No. 10 Malaysia and world No. 9 Korea after a day’s break.
The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan hockey match will take place on August 9. India and world No. 16 Pakistan are the joint most-successful teams at the Asian Champions Trophy with three titles each.
The top four teams at the end of the single-legged round-robin league stage will qualify for the semi-finals. The final will be played on August 12.
India will be led by defender and penalty corner specialist Harmanpreet Singh while midfielder Hardik Singh will be his deputy.
The Asian Champions Trophy was last held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2021. South Korea defeated Japan in the final on penalties to win their maiden title. India defeated Pakistan 4-3 in the bronze medal match.
The Asian Champions Trophy 2023 will also serve as a preparatory event for the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, scheduled for September-October this year.
