The USA team, led by Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee, will be out to defend their Rio 2016 crown at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics artistic gymnastics women’s team final on Tuesday.
The qualifying rounds sprung quite a surprise. Even though Simone Biles (57.731) finished on top and Sunisa Lee (57.166) was placed third in the all-around individual rankings, Team USA, with a total of 170.562 points, finished behind ROC (171.629).
It is the first time since 2011, when the USA women’s gymnastics team is not the top qualifier heading into the final of any major competition.
However, qualifying scores won’t have any bearing in the final and the USA still look favourites to clinch their third consecutive artistic gymnastics women’s team Olympic gold medal.
The ROC team, spearheaded by Angelina Melnikova and Vladislava Urazova, though, can draw confidence from their showing in the qualifying rounds.
China, France, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy and hosts Japan will be the other six contenders in the final. Germany and Canada couldn’t make the cut for the final and will be the reserves.
The event will be held at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Tokyo.
