Artistic gymnastics will once again be a marquee sport at the Southeast Asian Games 2023, scheduled from May 5 to 17 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with eight medals on offer.
The artistic gymnastics programme at SEA Games 2023 will feature just the men’s edition with each gymnast allowed to compete in a maximum of four disciplines.
The event takes place across two days – Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 May at the Olympic Marquee, at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
The first day sees the team and individual all-around medals decided with the top eight on each apparatus qualifying for the finals, which take place across two afternoon sessions the following day.
Six-time world medallist Carlos Yulo is expected to be in the mix despite the Filipino withdrawing from the FIG Apparatus World Cup in Cairo, Egypt citing an ankle injury a fortnight before the Cambodia 2023 gymnastics competition starts on Monday 8 May.
The two-time world champion is expected to compete in the team event, the individual all-around, parallel bars and horizontal bar disciplines. Yulo will be hoping to add to his 14 Southeast Asian Games medals, half of which are gold.
Yulo and his team-mates, including Juancho Miguel Besana, a bronze medallist on vault at SEA Games 2021, will be pushed hard by the Vietnamese contingent though, who took home an impressive four out of eight men’s gold medals last time out including victory in the team event.
Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien will also be back to defend his titles on pommel horse and the horizontal bar (shared with Yulo) and Dinh Phuong Thanh will try the same on parallel bars.
Singapore's Tay Wei-An Terry, who won silver on floor at the SEA Games in Hanoi in 2021, is back for his fifth SEA Games having first competed in the 2011 edition. He has the honour of being the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of Cambodia 2023 on Friday 5 May.
