Artistic Gymnastics at Pan Am Games 2023: Preview, full schedule, and how to watch live action of the Paris 2024 Qualifier
World and Olympic champion Rebeca Andrade returns to competition at the Paris 2024 Qualifying event, after taking five medals including vault gold at the World Championships two weeks ago in Belgium
Fresh of a five-medal haul at the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, Rebeca Andrade of Brazil is set to compete one last time this season at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
Andrade will be joined by Flavia Saraiva, who, along with Andrade, was part of the historic silver medal team effort in Antwerp. Saraiva also captured bronze on the floor exercise, her first individual medal.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist and 2022 World team champion Jordan Chiles is also headlining the field in her first international competition of the season.
Team USA with Chiles will face off with Brazil and Andrade for the team gold. The U.S. has won the last five in-a-row, with Brazil’s silver medal at the 2007 Games at home in Rio its highest finish at the Pan Ams.
If Andrade elects to compete in the all-around, the 2022 World all-around champion and this year’s runner-up to Simone Biles will, of course, be the favourite for gold. If not, look for Chiles and Saraiva to have a chance for gold, in an individual event which also offers a direct quota spot to qualify for Paris 2024.
In the men’s competition, it will likely come down to the U.S., which took bronze at the Worlds, and Canada, fresh off a brilliant performance in Antwerp that saw them secure a full-team Olympic quota spot for Paris 2024.
After finishing 10th and 12th, respectively, at the Worlds in the all-around, Brazil’s Diogo Soares and Canada’s Rene Cournoyer could challenge for the individual podium in Santiago. American Colt Walker, who had the highest score in the all-around at the U.S. nationals without a special bonus system in place at the event, is another contender.
The Paris 2024 quotas available in Santiago will see the highest eligible athlete in the men’s and women’s individual all-around competitions securing a spot. Athletes from the United States and Canada, among others, are not eligible for the spot, having already secured a maximum number of quotes for next year's Games.
