All Around profile - Angelina Melnikova

Olympic Channel to follow 2019 European Games all-around gymnastics champion all the way to Tokyo 2020

Melni THUMB

Angelina Melnikova showed early promise as a gymnast, winning the European Junior all-around title in 2014 and scoring a stunning victory in 2015 Russian Cup while still a junior.

She then won three golds at the Russian National Championships - including the all-around title - in her first year in the senior ranks to earn a place at the 2016 Olympics.

In Rio, Melnikova was part of the Russian team which took the silver medal behind the United States.

Individually, things did not go quite to plan as her 22nd place in all-around qualification saw her miss out on the final.

Now the 18-year-old from Voronezh is back and seeking individual glory on the global stage.

Her 2019 has included three medals (one silver, two bronze) at the European Championships and two golds and two silvers at the recent European Games in Minsk.

Between those two competitions, All Around started following Melnikova in June when we were given exclusive access to her at the Russian National Training Centre in Ozero Krugloye ('Round Lake') just outside Moscow.

Melnikova's all-around title in Belarus shows that she is starting to find the consistency to match her obvious talent.

When the World Championships in Stuttgart get underway in October, she will hope to win her first individual medals after her fifth in the all-around and fourth on floor exercise in Doha in 2018.

Watch Angela Melnikova's progress in the original series 'All Around' on Olympic Channel all the way to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
