In their 11th CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) participation, South Africa aims for a second title in the 2024 tournament in Côte d'Ivoire, spanning from 13 January to 11 February.
Bafana Bafana's peak performance came in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, clinching the title in 1996 on home ground, securing second place in 1998, and third in 2000. Their journey since includes quarter-final appearances in 2002, 2013, and 2019, but with mixed results leading to missing four of the last seven tournaments, including 2021.
Qualifying for the 2023 AFCON with wins over Morocco, South Africa shows fluctuating form. Under Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who led Cameroon to the 2019 title, they're set against Mali, Namibia, and Tunisia in Group E.
Leading the team are Percy Tau from Al Ahly and experienced Themba Zwane, as they seek to replicate their 1996 success.
And the Bafana Bafana managed to advance as runner-up in their group behind Mali.
After losing their opener 2-0 to Mali, the team regrouped and followed it up with a convincing 4-0 over Namibia. They drew even against Tunisa in the last game in the group stage.
In the round of 16, they notched a 2-0 victory over Morocco to advance to the quarterfinals where they lined up against Cape Verde. There, they won in penalty kicks.
South Africa again took it to penalties against Nigeria in the semi-final, but couldn't come up with the win. They'll play DR Congo in the third place match to conclude their AFCON appearance.
