Making only their 11th appearance at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), South Africa will be hunting their second title at the biennial continental showpiece in Côte d'Ivoire from 13 January to 11 February 2024.
Bafana Bafana has not come close to their early successes in the tournament, which saw them winning on debut on home soil in 1996 before finishing runners-up in 1998 and third in 2000.
The South Africans reached the quarter-final stages in 2002, 2013 and 2019 but have been plagued by inconsistency, which saw them missing out on four of the last seven AFCON tournaments, including the 2021 edition.
The side qualified for the 2023 AFCON courtesy of two victories over World Cup semi-finalists Morocco but has been blowing hot and cold since booking their places for the tournament.
Mentored by Belgian Hugo Broos, who coached Cameroon to their fifth AFCON crown in 2019, Bafana Bafana will face Mali, Namibia and Tunisia in Group E. They will face Mali in their tournament opener on 16 January before going up against neighbours Namibia on 21 January. The South Africans end the group stages with a tough assignment against 2004 champion Tunisia on 24 January.
The 1996 champions will be spearheaded by Percy Tau, a forward for Egyptian Premier League club Al Ahly and veteran Themba Zwane.
