Australian cricketer Adam Zampa, who was in the Rajasthan Royals squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2024 season, has withdrawn from the tournament citing personal reasons.
The 31-year-old Adam Zampa, who was retained by the Royals for IPL 2024, was one of the 17 Australian players originally set to play in India’s premier T20 cricket tournament.
“He has a young family at home and has had a busy recent schedule, playing in the BBL as well as Australia's white-ball series against India, West Indies and New Zealand since the end of last year's ODI World Cup in India,” ESPNCricinfo reported.
Zampa made his IPL debut in 2016 with the now defunct Rising Pune Supergiant and stayed on with the team in 2017. In 2020, he played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru before moving to the Rajasthan Royals in 2023.
A leg spinner, Zampa has played in 20 IPL matches in four seasons, picking up 19 wickets at an average of 19.24 and an economy of 7.99. He has one five-wicket haul, a 6/19 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Last season, Zampa took eight wickets at 23.50 apiece and had an economy rate of 8.54. His best bowling figures were 3/22 against the Chennai Super Kings.
Rajasthan Royals are yet to announce a replacement for the Australian. RR’s first match in IPL 2024 is against the Lucknow Super Giants on March 24.
A regular member of the Australian cricket team, Adam Zampa has played 99 ODIs and 80 T20 matches for the national side since making his international debut in 2016.
Zampa is the second Australian to withdraw from the latest edition of the IPL. Earlier, Jason Behrendorff was ruled out after the 33-year-old left-arm pacer broke his leg during training at the WACA. Behrendorff was a member of the Mumbai Indians team.
