The upcoming Indian Premier League season will start with a clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
The CSK vs RCB opening match, however, will be broadcast live in Australia in the early hours of Saturday. IPL 2024 will be available on live streaming and on TV in Australia.
The group stage of the IPL is played in a round-robin format. Ten teams have been drawn into two groups. Each team plays twice against all five teams in the other group (home and away) and once against all four of the teams in its own group. All teams play seven home and seven away games culminating into 14 matches for each team.
At the end of the group stage, the top four teams based on aggregate points qualify for the IPL playoffs. The top two teams face each other in Qualifier 1 and the winner progresses to the final. The side that loses Qualifier 1 gets another chance to go to the final in Qualifier 2. The other team in Qualifier 2 will be the winner of the Eliminator match, played between the third and fourth-placed teams.
Top stars like MS Dhoni (CSK), Virat Kohli (with the now rechristened Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) will be in action in IPL 2024.
Mumbai Indians will be under a new captain. Hardik Pandya, who left Gujarat Titans, has replaced Rohit Sharma at the helm of the five-time IPL champions.
There will be 17 Australian players in IPL 2024. Pat Cummins will lead Sunrisers Hyderabad. Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc will turn up for Kolkata Knight Riders while veteran Glenn Maxwell will bat for RCB. Delhi Capitals have four Aussies in their fold while CSK have none.
