After a month-long hiatus, the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Basketball World Tour is back for its third stop in Marseille, France, from 30 June-1 July.
With such a long pause between events, you might expect several changes to have occurred and yet, in many ways, lots of things have stayed the same.
The first thing you can be sure hasn't changed since May is that the current number one side Ub, comprised of Serbia's Marko Brankovic, Strahinja Stojacic, Dejan Majstorovic and Nemanja Barac, remains the team to stop.
After claiming World Tour victories in Utsunomiya and Manila, the Serbians took a quick detour to clean up at the 3x3 World Cup in Vienna , where they won their country's sixth world title, underlying just how much of a force they have become in 2023.
Though they might have dipped a little on the Challengers circuit since then, when it comes to the World Tour stage Ub is 10 from 10 unbeaten, setting a dangerous precedent for what lies ahead.
Another feature that has stayed unchanged is the teams with the strength to contend with Ub.
Antwerp and Vienna, who finished second and third respectively at the Ustunomiya Opener, as well as Amsterdam, will be among those arriving in the French port town looking to challenge and, with Worthy de Jong, Arvin Slagter, Dennis Donkor and Matthias Linortner all down to make it to Marseille, the battle for the podium will be fierce.
Like other Masters events, Marseille will begin with a round-robin pool stage. The winners of each group will then face the runner-up in another group with the eventual victor progressing through to a quarter-final. From there, the competition is knock-out until the final slated to take place on the evening of Saturday 1 July.
As well as guaranteeing high-octane fast-paced action, the 3x3 WT Marseille will also serve as an opportunity for teams to earn points towards qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Federation Ranking list, calculated based on the points collected by a National Olympic Committee’s top 25 national players competing in FIBA-endorsed events, will be used to determine the first three quota spots for Paris and eligibility for subsequent Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
