The 2024 track season may be in its infancy but that doesn’t mean the USA’s best and brightest don’t want to show their form heading into an Olympic year.
That chance will come on the 16 and 17 February when many of America's athletics stars will compete at the USATF Indoor Championships.
World champions, Olympic champions and world record holders will all be on display in Albuquerque, New Mexico with many vying to be selected for the World Athletics Indoor Championships that take place from 1-3 March in Glasgow, Scotland. Among them, stars such as Noah Lyles, Katie Moon and Grant Holloway will be eager to get straight into the action in a year that culminates with the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
For others, this championship represents an opportunity to put their names on the map and test their talents against more experienced opposition.
Read on to find out everything you need to know about this year’s USATF Indoor Championships.
Athletes to watch at the USATF Indoor Championships
One of the biggest names on the start line is Noah Lyles, the reigning world outdoor 100m and 200m champion. While he will be racing over the unfamiliar 60m distance, it will allow him to test what he believes to be his weakest point: his start. And he will need to get out of the blocks fast to ensure he beats the greatest 60m runner of all time - world record holder Christian Coleman.
Talking of world champions - and indeed world record holders - Grant Holloway will line up in the 60m hurdles, a race in which he holds the world record. The 26-year-old is a three-time world champion over 110m but will face a stiff challenge in the form of 2022 world silver medallist Trey Cunningham at these indoor championships.
Keep a close eye on Aleia Hobbs in the women’s 60m - the American record holder and US champion. The 27-year-old will be aiming to show what she is capable of in the individual sprints with Paris 2024 around the corner, having already won an Olympic silver in the 4x100m at Tokyo 2020.
In the field events, Katie Moon will be, as always, one of the biggest stars to watch. The reigning Olympic gold medallist and two-time world title holder won last gold at year’s USATF Indoor Championships as well as in 2018 and 2019, but has never won world indoor gold.
Ryan Crouser is also scheduled to compete in the shot put following an exceptional 2023 in which he shattered his own world record.
Other names to keep a close eye on throughout the competition include Talitha Diggs in the women’s 400m, Bryce Hoppel in the men’s 800m, Nikki Hiltz in the women’s 1500m and Masai Russell in the women’s 60m hurdles, to name a few.
