One nil up and seven minutes to go, Chile’s perfect football run was destroyed as they they were scored on for the first time all tournament. After a 1-1 draw at the 90 and no goals in overtime, Brazil took the win in penalty shootouts.

It was nearly seven and a half hours of play and Chile was on the role of a lifetime with not a single goal against them at the 2023 Pan American Games. With seven minutes to the 90, Brazil’s Ronald Cardoso scored and the dream of Chile’s first gold in men’s football at the Pan Am Games was shattered.

The home crowd was heartbroken.

History repeated itself and the events that transpired paralleled those of the 1987 Games in Indianapolis, where Brazil beat Chile in the finals, crushing their dreams of gold for the first time, 36 years ago.

Chile’s Max Guerrero scored as the halftime was closing in, and the excitement from the crowd just about shook the stadium. He also scored Chile’s first goal of the tournament against Mexico.

The Brazilians came out with renewed intensity after the half and with just seven minutes left of the clock, Cardoso tied it up, sending the teams into overtime.

It was the second consecutive night that a full house showed out for home football teams and were disappointed, as the women took silver just 24 hours before.
