2023 BWF World Junior Championships: Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan and Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniput claim singles titles - all final results

People’s Republic of China took gold in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles, while Japan won the women’s doubles event.

The 2023 BWF World Junior Championships in Spokane, United States saw Alwi Farhan become the first ever world badminton champion in men’s singles from Indonesia in the 31 years history of the competition.

Farhan defeated Hu Zhe An of the People’s Republic of China in the final 21-19 19-21 21-14. France’s Alex Lanier and India’s Ayush Shetty won bronze in the event in Washington state, which was broadcast live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app (territorial restrictions may apply).

In women’s singles, 16-year-old Pitchamon Opatniput of Thailand claimed gold, beating Indonesian Chiara Marvella Handoyo 21-11, 21-9. The bronze medals went to Linran Huang and Wenjing Xu, both from People’s Republic of China.

Elsewhere, the women’s doubles saw Francesca Corbett and Allison Lee secure the first ever medal for the United States in the World Junior Championships. However, Japan’s Taguchi Maya and Tamaki Aya proved to be too strong and beat the American duo 12-21 21-13 21-15 in the final. Sudo Mei/Yamakita Nao and Hiramoto Ririna/Kiyose Riko - also from Japan, were awarded bronze.

Meanwhile, Ma Shang and Zhu Yi Jun of People’s Republic of China took the men’s doubles crown winning the final 17-21, 21-17, 21-15 against Lai Po Yu and Tsai Fu Cheng from Chinese Taipei. The last podium spot was shared between Malaysians Bryan Jeremy Gooting/Aaron Tai and Chinese Taipei’s Huang Jui-hsuan/Huang Tsung-i.

The People’s Republic of China were also victorious in mixed doubles, where Liao Pin Yi and Zhang Jia Han clinched the title, defeating compatriots Zhi Yi Jun and Huang Ke Xin 21-10, 16-21, 24-22. Low Han Chen/Chong Jie Yu of Malaysia and Indonesia’s Jonathan Farrell Gosal/Priskila Venus Elsadai earned bronze.

In the team’s event, the People’s Republic of China also won gold.
