Biography

Novak Djokovic has won a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles making him statistically the greatest tennis player in history.

His journey to tennis stardom began at a young age. Born in 1987 in what was then Yugoslavia, he took up the sport aged four when his ski coach father gave him a mini-racket and a ball. It became young Novak's favourite toy and tennis won out over skiing. The high cost of tennis camps and academies saw his parents resort to high-interest loans to continue Djokovic's development, in the hope that he would come good and repay them. He has done that many times over.

Novak Djokovic: the making of a legend

The Serbian played in his first professional tournament aged 15 and won his first ATP Challenger tournament a year later in May 2004. In July 2006, he claimed his first ATP Tour title at the Dutch Open without losing a set and finished the year ranked 16 in the world.

In 2007, with Roger Federer atop the world rankings, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal emerged as his biggest challengers. The Spaniard beat Djokovic in the Indian Wells final but Djokovic quickly gained revenge in Miami for his first Masters title. Later that year, he reached a first Grand Slam final at the US Open but Federer defeated him in straight sets.
