Eugenie LE SOMMER

At 18 years old, Le Sommer made her professional debut in the French Women's Football Championship, joining the Saint-Brieuc club Stade Briochin. The attacking player soon became one of the best players in the French D1 Femenine league and was appointed team captain at the age of 20.

After her stint in Brittany, in 2007 she joined Olympique Lyonnais, the most renowned club in France at the time. She went on to become the club's top scorer with a record of over 300 goals. Lyon emerged as a dominant force in European football and won an incredible eight Champions League titles, in addition to 10 domestic French D1 titles.

Eugénie Le Sommer: Becoming a French mainstay

Le Sommer joined the elite A team of French women's football at 19 and quickly became a regular squad member. She has participated in four World Cups and at two Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016) prior to Paris 2024.

In 2021, Le Sommer broke the record for the most goals scored in the history of the French women's football team, surpassing Marinette Pichon's record of 81 goals. Her goals-per-selection ratio for the French squad surpasses all statistics in modern national football for both male and female players.

"The Olympics may be far away, but they are the ultimate goal for the end of the season and are at the forefront of my mind," she told AFP News Agency durign the 2022/23 season. "I am unsure if this will be my last competition, but I am not setting any limits, and we will see what happens."
