Nathan CHEN

Nathan Chen is a three-time (2018, 2019 and 2021) world champion figure skater and defending Olympic champion from the United States.

Chen is based in the Los Angeles area and is coached by Rafael Arutunian. He has used a variety of choreographers in his career, but most recently has stuck with three-time Olympic ice dancer Shae-Lynn Bourne. He trained remotely for two seasons while attending Yale University, but returned to the Southern California area at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The American set a new world record score in the short program at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 en route to winning the Olympic title, after previously being part of the USA team that won silver (as of 2 March 2022, the team event result is provisional).

In the team event, Chen skated only in the short program, landing two quadruple jumps, the flip and Lutz, for a personal best 111.71, just fractions of a point shy of the world record. That personal best would be improved upon in the individual event, as he landed all his jump passes cleanly for a 113.97 new world record.

In the free skate, he overcame a popped triple flip as he landed five quads (just as he had in 2018 at PyeongChang) to score 218.63 for a total of 332.60, becoming the seventh American man to win the men's figure skating Olympic title.

Four years earlier, he helped his team to a bronze-medal finish at PyeongChang 2018 in the figure skating team event. He made his Olympic debut at the age of 18 in Korea, becoming the first man to attempt six quadruple jumps in the individual free skate - and first to land five cleanly.

Chen had podium hopes at the Games in 2018, but he stumbled in the short program of both the team and individual events, respectively. Coming into PyeongChang, the teenager had an unblemished season record and was anticipated to go head-to-head with reigning Olympic champion Hanyu Yuzuru.

However, Chen struggled on both an attempted quadruple Lutz and quad toe jumps in the individual short program, failing to do a combination in the segment and stumbling to 17th place. He would bounce back in the free, winning the segment with a 215.08 and hop-scotching himself to fifth place overall.

Chen would go undefeated in international competition from the world championships in 2018 through to Skate America in 2021, winning 10 events in a row before a third-place finish at Skate America kicked off his Olympic season. He rebounded with victory at Skate Canada the following week, and went from strength to strength to cap it off with Olympic gold.

"I've dreamed about this moment for a long time," he told after finally triumphing, "but I never really actually thought it would be something that could come to fruition."
