Biography

India’s first athletics world championship medal winner, Anju Bobby George occupies a special place in the country’s track and field history.

The two-time Olympian also holds India’s women’s long jump national record. What makes her accomplishments even more remarkable is the fact that she did it all with a single kidney.

Born in Kottayam, Kerala, on April 19, 1977, Anju Bobby George was initiated into the world of athletics by her father K.T. Markos as a child and her talent was honed at the CKM Koruthode school.

Anju Bobby George was an all-rounder growing up, excelling in 100m hurdles, relay, long jump and high jump, consistently winning medals in all four disciplines at various school events.

Before long, her interest turned towards heptathlon, an athletic event comprising seven different disciplines – 100m hurdles, high jump, shot-put, 200m sprint, long jump, javelin throw and 800m run.

While pursuing her graduation at Thrissur’s Vimala college in 1996, Anju Bobby George won a long jump medal at the junior Asian championships in New Delhi, motivating her to focus more on jumping events.

The general perception of people is that I have a perfect body. But the fact is that I achieved all the success in my field by overcoming all difficulties.
