Eduard Scherrer had never competed in the bobsled prior to his appearance at the Swiss trials for the 1924 Winter Olympics but, after winning a bobsled in a raffle, he was persuaded by his friends Alfred Neveu and Alfred and Heinrich Schläppi to try out for fun. Not only were they selected to compete at the Games, however, but they captured a gold medal after winning three of the four runs in the four/five man bobsled event. The 1924 Olympics were Scherrer’s only foray into the realm of international sport.
